What we do instead

Our audience measurement is Vercel Web Analytics, which counts page views without storing anything on your device and without building a profile of you. It cannot follow you to another website and we cannot use it to work out who you are. Because it stores nothing and identifies nobody, there is nothing for you to consent to.

The one thing this site does store on your device

If you switch between the light and dark versions of this site, your browser remembers which you chose, so the site does not change under you on the next page. That preference is stored in your browser's own local storage, never sent to us, and clearing your browsing data removes it. It is not a cookie and it is not used for anything else.

What changes if you press play

An episode page carries a video, and it loads nothing from YouTube until you click it – no script, no cookie, no request. Once you press play, YouTube's own player loads and YouTube may set cookies on your device under its own terms. We use the youtube-nocookie.com address, which is Google's privacy-preserving player, but the choice to load it is yours and it is a real one: everything else on the page, including the full transcript, works without ever pressing it.

Episode audio is served by Riverside, our podcast host. Playing it sends your request to their servers, as downloading any file does, and sets nothing on your device.

If that changes

If we ever add something that does set a cookie, we will ask you first and this page will say what it is before it is switched on.
